Here are two important reasons why opening a blocked account is necessary for vocational students in Germany:

  • Proof of financial capacity when applying for a visa: Blocked accounts help international students prove that they have sufficient financial means to cover their living expenses in Germany without needing support from the German Government.
  • Guarantee monthly living expenses during stay: Allocate a fixed monthly amount. This amount acts as a living allowance, helping international students ensure a stable source of finance for their entire time living and studying in Germany.

Required documents when opening a blocked account 

To open a blocked account to study in Germany, you need to prepare the following documents:

  • Passport (notarized copy)
  • Citizen identification card
  • Bank statement of source of funds
  • Blocked account opening application (online or on paper)

Procedure for opening a blocked account to study in Germany 

Below is the general procedure for opening a blocked account to study in Germany that you can refer to:

In Vietnam

  • Contact the German Embassy or Consulate in Vietnam to know the exact amount to be transferred to the blocked account. Note: Do not transfer money without official confirmation.
  • Open a blocked account to study in Germany according to the instructions of the bank you choose.
  • After submitting your application, you need to wait for the bank to process your application and issue account information.
  • Your bank will send you an international bank account number (IBAN) with instructions on how to transfer the money. You can transfer the money through your bank or an international money transfer service. Processing time usually takes about 3 to 5 days.
  • Receive confirmation letter from the bank: Once the money transfer transaction is completed, the bank will send you a confirmation letter about the blocked account. 
  • Submit the confirmation letter of the blocked account and the remaining documents to the German Embassy and wait for your visa application to be processed. If your application is approved, you will receive a D visa, which allows you to enter Germany and stay for a long time.

After going to Germany

  • Within 3 months of entering Germany, you must apply for a residence permit at the Foreigners' Office.
  • Once you have your residence permit, you can proceed to activate your blocked account. Each bank will have a different activation process, but in general, you will need to go directly to a bank branch in Germany and bring all the necessary documents to complete the procedure.
  • Once the account is successfully activated, the bank will automatically transfer your monthly living expenses from the blocked account to your personal account in Germany.

Instructions for opening a blocked account for vocational study in Germany 

The process of opening a blocked account for studying in Germany will have certain differences, depending on the bank you choose. Below are instructions on how to open a blocked account at Deutsche Bank:

Step 1: Download the application form

Download the application form to open a blocked account for studying in Germany. Deutsche Bank on demand:

  • Application form for people under 18 years old.
  • Application form for people 18 years of age or older.
  • Additional application form attached.
  • Account closure form.

Step 2: Fill in information online

Some notes when filling out the application to open a blocked account for studying in Germany that you need to know:

  • Page 1: In section 1, please fill in your personal information. In which, “Meldeadresse” is the postal address where Deutsche Bank will send the documents. When you arrive in Germany, you can change this address information. Sections 2, 3 and 4 can be left blank.

Step 3: Make an appointment for signature certification

To complete the account opening procedure, you need to go to German Embassy or Consulate in Vietnam to verify the signature. When you go, please prepare the following documents:

  • Passport (original, notarized copy)
  • Completed blocked account opening application form
  • Certification fee (depending on the regulations of each diplomatic agency)

Step 4: Submit account opening application

After completing the signature authentication on the account opening application at the German Embassy or Consulate, you need to send the application package to Germany by post to the address: Deutsche Bank, Privat- und Geschäftskunden AG, Frankfurter Straße 1, 04024 Leipzig, Germany. The application package includes the authenticated account opening application and a notarized copy of your passport.

Step 5: Activate blocked account

Once the bank has processed your application, you will receive an email notification of successful account opening, along with the account number (IBAN) and other necessary information. At this point, you can proceed to transfer money to the blocked account.

Note: The balance is calculated after deducting the relevant fees. If the remaining amount reaches or exceeds the required amount, Deutsche Bank will send you a balance confirmation email and simultaneously notify the German Embassy in Hanoi or the German Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.

Step 6: Receive a certificate of successful registration from the Immigration Department

Once you have entered the country and completed the registration of your residence address in Germany, you will receive a confirmation from the Foreigners' Office. You can then go to your nearest Deutsche Bank branch to activate your account and get a personal bank card.
