The German capital lies approximately 180 km south of the Baltic Sea, 190 km north of the Czech-German border, 177 km east of the former inner German border, and 89 km west of Poland. Berlin stretches along the banks of the River Spree, which flows through the city center.  The average elevation of the city is 35 meters above sea level, the highest point near the city center is the summit of Kreuzberg – a hill 66 meters above sea level.

The city of Berlin is built mainly on sandy glacial soils between a vast belt of forested lakes, formed by the Havel River to the west and the waters of the Dahme River to the southeast.

Climate

Terrain  

The original twin towns of Berlin and Cologne, which dates back to the early 13th century, developed on an island in the Spree River (Kölln) and a small piece of land on the north bank of the river opposite the island (Berlin). By the late 17th and early 18th centuries, when the Electors of Brandenburg (Kings of Prussia from 1701) became powerful figures in European politics, the city expanded, adorned with wide boulevards, beautiful squares and magnificent stone castles.

The city center is dominated by broad north-south boulevards such as Friedrichstrasse, Wilhelmstrasse and the characteristic east-west axis. Complementing the main axis are several exit roads, which now serve as the main traffic arteries of the German capital.

Berlin's education and economy
