What are ECTS credits?

ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) is a standardized credit system widely used throughout the European Union, including Germany.

The ECTS system was created to standardize the assessment of students' learning and practice, facilitating the transfer of credits between schools and countries in the EU. In addition, ECTS also helps to recognize learning experiences from many different environments, while opening up opportunities for further study or transfer after graduation.

In the ECTS system, each course, which includes both theory and practice, is usually converted into credits based on the total time the student needs to study. Each credit corresponds to approximately 25 to 30 hours of study and practice, specifically as follows:

  • For applied bachelor's programmes or specialist professions, students can accumulate between 180 and 240 ECTS credits over a period of 3 and 4 years.
  • For postgraduate training programs, such as applied-oriented master's or advanced professional training, it is usually from 60 to 120 credits, corresponding to 1 to 2 years of study.

Credit system in Vietnam and Europe

When preparing your application to study in Germany, you need to convert Vietnamese credits to the ECTS system. Understanding the two credit systems will help you be more proactive in preparing your documents and study plan.

Credit system in Vietnam

In Vietnam, the current credit system is regulated by Decision No. 43/2007/QD-BGDDT of the Ministry of Education and Training. According to this regulation, a credit represents the amount of study that you need to complete. In which, a credit is calculated based on one of the following cases:

  • 15 theory lessons (each lesson lasts 50 minutes)
  • 30–45 hours of practice, experiment, or discussion
  • 45–90 hours of internship at a business
  • 45–60 hours of homework, essays, projects or graduation thesis.

In addition to class time, you must spend at least 30 hours on self-study, review, and preparation for each credit.

Note: Before the credit system was widely applied, many universities in Vietnam used another unit called “credit” to measure the amount of study. During the transition, the schools agreed on the ratio: 1.5 credits equals 1 credit.

Depending on the academic year, students can accumulate from less than 30 to over 150 credits. Specifically:

  • First year: under 30 credits
  • Year two: from 30 to under 60 credits
  • Year 3: from 60 to under 90 credits
  • Fourth year: from 90 to under 120 credits
  • Five years: from 120 to under 150 credits
  • Year six: 150 credits or more

Credit system in Europe

In Germany and many EU countries, the ECTS credit system is used to measure the learning load according to European standards. The ECTS credit calculation is as follows:

  • 1 year of full-time study: equivalent to 60 ECTS credits
  • 1 semester (half a year): equivalent to 30 ECTS credits
  • 1 short term (about 4 months): equivalent to 20 ECTS credits

According to the regulations of the Conference of Ministers of Culture of the German states (KMK), the total study time in a year is about 1,800 hours including classroom hours, practice, internship and self-study. Based on that, 1 ECTS credit is equivalent to about 30 study hours.
